The IBMi (AS/400) Support Team Member at Hirschbach Motor Lines plays a critical role in providing technical expertise and support for IBMi systems, ensuring their smooth operation across production, test, and development environments. This role encompasses a range of responsibilities, from software installation and maintenance to performance monitoring and troubleshooting, with a focus on optimizing system performance and reliability. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Knowledge:​​​​​  Skilled team member proficient in IBM power system technologies, demonstrating excellent understanding and expertise in iBMi systems. 

System Maintenance and Upgrades: Perform software installation, OS upgrades, server build/migration, and proactive maintenance, including scheduling and executing OD and third-party software upgrades and PTF installations. Conduct capacity planning, performance monitoring, and tuning to ensure optimal system performance. 

Scripting and Automation: Develop and execute CL programs for various backup, monitoring, and job scheduling activities to streamline system operations. 

Environment Support: Provide comprehensive support for production, test and development environments, including configuration and maintenance of all IBMi systems and related hardware. 

Communication and Collaboration: Serve as an escalation point for IBMi issues within the user community, effectively communicating status and issues to management on a regular basis. Interface with vendors regularly to resolve technical issues and ensure the smooth functioning of IBMi sytems. 

Manage BRMS (Backup, Recovery, and Media Services) to determine and implement backup/recovery plans, ensuring data integrity and disaster recovery preparedness. 

Documentation and Ticket Handling: Develop documentation and deployment plans to support the production environment, ensuring clarity and consistency in system management procedures. Handle documentation and tickets efficiently, maintaining accurate records of system configurations, maintenance activities, and issue resolutions. 

Job Training and Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma is required. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related discipline is preferred. 
  • Proficiency in IBM power system technologies and IBMo operating system. 
  • Experience in scripting and automation using the CL programming language
  • Strong understanding of capacity planning, performance monitoring, and system tuning in IBMi environments.
